Microneedling
Potenza RF Microneedling by CynosureÂ
The Potenza microneedling treatment uses ultra fine needles and radio frequency (RF) energy to penetrate the top layer of the skin and trigger the body's natural healing process to regenerate new collagen and elastin. The Potenza can tighten skin, and ensure firmness, through soft-tissue coagulation. This allows for the regeneration of elastin and collagen to the treated areas, resulting in a revitalized appearance of the skin.Â
Â
The Potenza can work anywhere on the body to treat skin that is lacking volume. It's also an excellent treatment for scarring associated with surgeries, acne or other injuries. Ask one of our estheticians for more information today!

About Microneedling
When topical skin treatments aren't improving your skin as you had hoped, but you aren't ready for surgery, try nonsurgical procedures for skin rejuvenation, like microneedling. At RiverSong Plastic Surgery, our nurse offers microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) using the innovative Eclipse Pen at our office in Newburyport, MA. Microneedling is performed with multiple fine-gauge needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries in the facial skin. Micro-injuries trigger the body's natural production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that boost the overall health and appearance of your skin. Easily combined with other treatments, like serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma), microneedling can help smooth the texture of the skin and minimize pores with mild skin tightening.
Schedule a consultation at RiverSong Plastic Surgery to discover more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to customize the treatment for your skin concerns and goals.

Ideal Candidates
You may benefit from microneedling if you have slight to moderate skin issues, like a decrease in firmness or uneven texture. Microneedling treatments can also improve the appearance of skin irregularities, scars, and pores. Benefits from your microneedling treatment will become obvious over a period of 1-3 months since the collagen and elastin will need a month or longer to have an effect on the skin. In a short amount of time, you will see significant improvement and natural-looking results with smoother, healthier, stronger skin.

Procedure Technique
Collagen induction therapy with microneedling is done in one of our office procedure rooms. The treatment takes about 30 – 60 minutes with topical numbing cream for anesthesia. Patients typically experience mild or no discomfort. The skin being treated will be cleansed before the Eclipse microneedling pen is passed evenly over the skin with several passes to give the ultimate treatment. After the microneedling is complete, a topical treatment, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum, can be applied. Deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin is facilitated by the micro-injuries. A moisturizer will be massaged in along with sun protection as your skin will be sensitive after the treatment.
What to Expect
Following the procedure, you might develop light swelling and redness for about 24-48 hours, but this should resolve on its own. Optimum healing proceeds with continuous skin moisturization. As the collagen and elastin levels increase you will begin to see optimal improvements in the health and appearance of your treated skin. You should plan to undergo maintenance treatments once or twice a year to maintain optimal and long-term skin health.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does microneedling cost?
Costs for microneedling will vary, depending on what is in your treatment plan. During your consultation, our aesthetician will evaluate your skin and then develop your personalized plan. Once this is done, she will talk about your costs and the procedure process. RiverSong Plastic Surgery often offers specials on treatment packages so ask about current deals during your consultation.
Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
During the microneedling process, channels are created in your skin that make it easier for treatments to penetrate the deeper layers. Microneedling is commonly combined with other treatments, like vitamin-rich serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). During your consultation, our aesthetician can recommend treatments that be performed along with microneedling to produce even better results. Microneedling works well with Botulinum toxin and filler treatments, but not done at the same treatment session.
How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Usually, patients need about three sessions 2-3 months apart to achieve optimal results. However, the number of treatments needed will depend on your goals and the condition of your skin. Microneedling can be performed as often as every two months if needed. During your consultation, our aesthetician will estimate how many treatments you will need based on your skin and goals. Once you have reached your goal, Dr. Sasmor recommends receiving maintenance treatments one to two times a year.
Is microneedling safe for everyone?
As a whole, microneedling is safe for all skin types and tones. Since the skin injuries created are very tiny, there are usually no side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be applied to most areas of skin but is generally used on the face. Microneedling is not recommended if you have been on Accutane in the last few months, as well as if you have an active skin infection, herpes simplex, or an open wound. In addition, you may not be a candidate for microneedling if you are pregnant, nursing, or undergoing radiation treatments.
